How to Build a Fitness App Like Cult.fit
Cult.fit combines three businesses in one app: gym and group-class memberships, online workouts, and health products. For a gym owner or studio chain, the useful part is the membership and class engine — members book a slot, check in with a QR code and renew without visiting the front desk.
We build these apps for gym chains, yoga and dance studios, CrossFit boxes and personal trainers who have outgrown spreadsheets and WhatsApp groups. The goal is higher renewals and fuller classes, not a copy of a national brand.
How Cult.fit actually works
Members buy a plan — monthly, quarterly, a class pack or unlimited access across centres. Group classes have limited capacity, so members book a slot in the app, get reminders and check in at the centre by scanning a QR code. No-shows can cost credits, which keeps classes full.
Trainers see their schedule, attendance and member notes. Owners see revenue, renewals due, class occupancy and trainer performance. Online workouts and diet plans extend the relationship outside the gym.

Integrations for the Indian market
Cost and timeline to build an app like Cult.fit
A single gym needs much less than a multi-centre chain with online content.
| Scope | What's included | Budget (INR) | Timeline |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single gym / studio app | Plans, renewals, class booking, check-in, owner dashboard | ₹1.5L – ₹2.5L | 6–8 weeks |
| Chain MVP | Multi-centre, trainer app, leads, PT sessions, reports | ₹2.5L – ₹5L | 8–12 weeks |
| Fitness platform | Video library, diet tracking, wearables, store, challenges | ₹8L – ₹15L+ | 4–6 months |
Running costs (servers, maps, SMS, payment fees) are separate — see our app maintenance cost guide.
The hard parts founders underestimate
- Renewal leakage. Most gym revenue loss is members who quietly don't renew. Automated reminders and one-tap renewal in the app recover a lot of it.
- Class no-shows. Late cancellation rules, waitlists that auto-promote and credit penalties keep popular classes full.
- Front desk adoption. Staff must be able to sell a plan, freeze a membership or add a walk-in faster in the app than on paper.
- Multi-centre rules. Which plans work in which centres, peak-hour limits and transfers get complicated quickly. Model them early.
- Video costs. On-demand workouts are cheap to add but cost money to stream. Start with a small library and measure usage.
Tech stack we would use
| Layer | Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Member & trainer apps | Flutter | Polished UI, one codebase |
| Backend | Node.js + PostgreSQL | Plans, bookings and payments |
| Check-in | Rotating QR + device API | Secure attendance |
| Admin | React | Front-desk and owner dashboards |
| Video | Mux | Adaptive streaming |
Questions founders ask us
I have one gym in Greater Noida. Is a custom app worth it?
If you have a few hundred members, a simple app for renewals, class booking and check-in usually pays for itself through better renewals. It costs about ₹1.5L–₹2.5L.
Can members pay monthly automatically?
Yes, with UPI AutoPay or card mandates through Razorpay Subscriptions.
Can the app work with our biometric machine?
Often yes, if the device offers an API or data export. Otherwise QR check-in replaces it.
Can trainers give diet plans in the app?
Yes. Trainers assign workout and diet templates and track member progress.
Do you also build websites for gyms?
Yes — a fast website with plans, trial booking and Google Business Profile setup brings local leads.
