How to Build a Social Commerce App Like Meesho
Meesho grew by letting ordinary people — often homemakers in smaller towns — sell products to their own WhatsApp contacts without holding stock. Suppliers list products, resellers share them with a margin added, and the platform handles payment and delivery.
Today the same model works for narrower ideas: a wholesaler in Delhi's Gandhi Nagar or Surat letting retailers resell their catalogue, a regional handloom or ethnic-wear marketplace, or a B2B app for kirana stores. The details of margins, COD and returns decide whether it makes money.
How Meesho actually works
Suppliers upload catalogues with wholesale prices and stock. Resellers browse, share product images to WhatsApp or Instagram in one tap, and place orders on behalf of their customers with their own margin on top. The end customer often pays cash on delivery.
The platform picks up from the supplier, delivers to the end customer, collects COD, and pays the supplier and the reseller's margin after the return window closes. Returns and fake COD orders are the biggest cost, so the rules around them are core product decisions.

What goes in version 1 — and what should wait
Start with a few reliable suppliers and one category before opening the platform.
| Launch (MVP) | Phase 2, after real users |
|---|---|
| Reseller app with sharing and margin | Direct-to-customer shopping app |
| Supplier web panel | Reseller levels and rewards |
| COD + prepaid checkout | Vernacular app languages |
| Shipping aggregator integration | Supplier ads and promoted catalogues |
| Returns with reason codes | Credit for resellers |
| Settlement for suppliers and resellers | Private label products |

Cost and timeline to build an app like Meesho
The logistics and settlement logic is where most of the effort goes.
| Scope | What's included | Budget (INR) | Timeline |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wholesaler reseller app | One supplier's catalogue, reseller app, orders, shipping integration | ₹2L – ₹4L | 8–10 weeks |
| Multi-supplier MVP | Supplier panel, moderation, COD/returns, settlements, payouts | ₹4.5L – ₹8L | 12–16 weeks |
| Full social commerce platform | Customer app, ads, rewards, vernacular, credit | ₹12L – ₹25L+ | 6–9 months |
Running costs (servers, maps, SMS, payment fees) are separate — see our app maintenance cost guide.
The hard parts founders underestimate
- RTO (return to origin) on COD. Unconfirmed COD orders get refused at the door. Order confirmation calls, COD limits and reseller reliability scores cut RTO losses.
- Settlement timing. Paying resellers before the return window closes creates losses. Ledgers must hold funds until orders are final.
- Catalogue quality. Blurry photos and wrong sizes cause returns. Supplier upload rules and moderation keep quality up.
- Shipping cost per order. Low-priced products can't absorb high shipping. Weight slabs and zone pricing must be accurate.
- Fake suppliers. GST verification, sample orders and payout holds for new suppliers limit fraud.

Questions founders ask us
I am a wholesaler. Can I let retailers resell my products through my own app?
Yes. A single-supplier reseller app is the fastest way to start, around ₹2L–₹4L.
How do resellers get paid?
Their margin is credited to an in-app wallet after the return window and can be withdrawn to bank or UPI.
Can you handle cash on delivery?
Yes, through shipping aggregators that collect COD and remit it; the admin reconciles every order.
How do you reduce returns?
Better catalogue rules, size charts, COD confirmation and reseller reliability scores.
Can the app be in Hindi?
Yes, and regional languages can be added in phase 2.
