How to Build a Doctor Appointment App Like Practo
An app like Practo connects patients with doctors in three ways: finding the right doctor, booking a confirmed slot at a clinic, and consulting online. Each of these depends on accurate doctor calendars, which is why the clinic-side software matters as much as the patient app.
The versions we build most often are narrower: a hospital or clinic chain's own booking app, a speciality network (dental, physiotherapy, IVF), or a city-level doctor directory with online consults. Health data also brings privacy duties that a generic booking app does not have.
How Practo actually works
Patients search by speciality, symptom, location, fee or language and see profiles with qualifications and clinic timings. Booking is only reliable when the doctor's clinic uses the same calendar — so Practo also sells clinic software that manages the queue, records and billing.
For online consultations, the patient pays, joins a video or chat session at the booked time, and receives a digital prescription. Records stay available to the patient for follow-ups. Under India's Telemedicine Practice Guidelines, the platform must support doctor identification, consent and proper prescription formats.

The hard parts founders underestimate
- Calendar truth. If doctors keep a paper diary alongside your app, double bookings follow. The clinic-side app must be easier than the diary, or adoption fails.
- Prescription rules. Digital prescriptions need the doctor's registration number and must respect restrictions on what can be prescribed in teleconsultation. We build the format around the Telemedicine Practice Guidelines.
- Health data privacy. Consent, encryption, access logs and data residency matter under India's DPDP Act. Security has to be designed in, not added later.
- Video quality on weak networks. Many patients join from low-bandwidth connections; fallbacks to audio and chat keep consultations from failing.
- No-shows. Reminders, prepayment for online consults and easy rescheduling reduce empty slots for doctors.

Do you integrate with ABDM / ABHA?
