How to Build a Home Services App Like Urban Company

Urban Company's advantage is not the booking screen — it is trust. Customers let a stranger into their home because the platform has verified, trained and rated that professional, fixed the price upfront and promised to fix problems. Your app has to encode that trust into every step.

Most businesses that come to us want a focused version: salon-at-home for women in one city, AC and appliance repair across NCR, cleaning services for societies, or pest control. Starting with one or two categories keeps quality control manageable.

How Urban Company actually works

The customer picks a service from a fixed-price menu (for example, '1.5 ton split AC service'), chooses a time slot and pays online or after the job. Behind the scenes, the platform only shows slots when a qualified professional in that area is actually free.

Professionals are onboarded, verified (ID, address, background check), trained and then graded. Jobs are offered to them based on skill, location, rating and fairness, and they buy kits and consumables from the platform. After the job, both sides rate each other and the platform settles the professional's payout minus commission.

The hard parts founders underestimate

  1. Real slot availability. Showing a slot that no professional can fulfil destroys trust. Availability must be computed from partner calendars, travel time and skills — not a static timetable.
  2. Partner leakage. Customers and partners may try to deal offline after the first visit. Masked calling, platform-only warranties and partner incentives reduce this.
  3. Pricing add-ons on site. Jobs change once the professional sees the problem. The app needs an approved add-on flow the customer confirms in-app.
  4. Quality enforcement. Ratings alone are not enough. Track rework, cancellations and complaints per partner and automate warnings and deactivation.
  5. Payout accuracy. Commissions, penalties, kit purchases and cash collected must reconcile every week or partners lose trust quickly.

Questions founders ask us

I run an AC service company with my own technicians. Do I need a marketplace?

No. A single-business booking app with a technician app and admin is simpler and cheaper, around ₹2L–₹3.5L. You can open it to outside partners later.

How do you verify service professionals?

The partner app collects ID and address documents; we can integrate KYC and background-verification providers, with final activation done by your admin team.

Can customers pay after the service?

Yes. We support prepaid, pay-after-service by UPI, and cash, with the partner app recording what was collected.

Can the app work for salon services at home?

Yes. Salon-at-home adds product kits, hygiene checklists and female-professional preferences, which we build into the booking and allocation rules.

How long will a marketplace MVP take?

Typically 10–14 weeks for customer app, partner app and admin.
